Completed Projects: Princes Arcade, London

Connecting London's world-famous Piccadilly with Jermyn Street, the prestigious Princes Arcade was built between 1929 and 1933. In 2017, Stone Concepts was extremely proud to be contracted by Ellmer Construction/Crown Estates to supply and install a new floor and other associated items as part of a massive refurbishment project to create "a space for innovative retail brands".

The new Princes Arcade combines a contemporary approach to design with the area's long and rich heritage, redefining the Regency-era shopping arcade for modern shoppers and brands. New additions included canopied entrances designed by artist Andrew Bick, a double-height glazed frontage, reconfigured units and improved lighting, along with floors and antique highlights installed by Stone Concepts.

Eight new retail spaces were added, with units ranging in size from 150 sq ft to 1,200 sq ft. Retailers include stylish Italian menswear brand Luca Faloni, the iconic Christy's millinery and Prestat, the chocolatier whose shop inspired Roald Dahl to write the classic children's book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Our remit was comprehensive and included complete drafting and drawing responsibilities, as well as the sourcing of material and installation itself. The designers selected Spanish Grey flamed material for its unique aesthetic qualities, robust durability and reliable slip-resistance.

The project involved many complex challenges, including accounting for the fact that the substrate of the arcade has no less than five different levels. As the work was taking place in the busy shopping period leading up to the festive season, we carried out our works during the night before protecting them during the day, allowing retailers to remain fully operational.

Working closely together, our expert team were able to complete the project on time. As can be seen from the images that accompany this article, Stone Concepts maintained the aesthetic history and heritage of the arcade while simultaneously and sympathetically introducing brand new elements
